Rationality and Pain
Moving on from the previous post, I found out in the course of researching the paper that the dominant discourse within the medicalisation of the mental health model is that anyone wishing to commit suicide is usually considered to have a mental illness. The exception is when the person wishes to commit suicide because they are in pain due to a terminal debilitating illness, then assuming psychiatrists can agree that they are rational in their choice, this is considered acceptable, i.e. it is considered euthanasia or accepted as Physician Assisted Suicide and therefore accepted as a rational decision to commit suicide.
The problem is that from this information we can then use deductive logic to suggest the following:
If a) The desire to commit suicide is irrational and a form of mental illness
But b) To consider committing suicide when suffering and in pain is not a mental illness and can be rational
Then c) Pain and suffering causes rationality.
